About This Phonics 2 ESL Unit

This final Level 1 phonics unit helps true beginners continue building early letter recognition and beginning sound awareness before moving into Level 2. In this first lesson, students start with Mm, Nn, and Oo through simple picture-word examples, chanting, tracing, listening tasks, and sound identification practice. These ESL phonics lessons are designed to keep early literacy work highly visual, repetitive, and easy to follow for young learners and first-time English students.

Because this is a true beginner ESL unit, the lessons focus on clear routines and supported practice rather than heavy reading. Students trace letters, identify beginning sounds, match letters to pictures, and respond to simple listening tasks. This makes the unit useful for teachers who want ready-made ESL lessons and beginner-friendly phonics materials that can be taught with very little prep.

What Students Practice in Unit 6

Across the full unit, students continue learning the rest of the alphabet in small, manageable groups. After Mm, Nn, and Oo, the unit moves on to Pp, Qq, and Rr, includes a review lesson for m–r, then continues with Ss, Tt, and Uu, followed by Vv, Ww, and Xx, and finishes with Yy and Zz. Students practice beginning sounds with vocabulary such as monkey, milk, mouse, pig, panda, pencil, seal, sun, turtle, tent, van, water, yo-yo, yak, zebra, and more.

The unit includes chant practice, tracing, sound sorting, yes/no sound checks, connect-and-say tasks, letter listening activities, and cumulative review pages. Because this is the last unit of Level 1, it also helps students review and consolidate the phonics foundation they built earlier in the curriculum. This makes it especially useful for ESL phonics activities, ESL lesson plans for kids, and teachers preparing learners for the next level.

Teaching Use

These lessons are designed as no-prep ESL lessons for teachers who need simple phonics materials for classroom teaching, tutoring, or online ESL lessons. As the final unit in Level 1 ESL curriculum, this set gives teachers a practical way to finish beginner letter-sound instruction with built-in repetition and review before students move on to Level 2.
