Free Elementary Christmas ESL Lesson with Reading & Vocabulary

This Elementary Christmas ESL Lesson provides a rich combination of vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and speaking practice for upper-elementary ESL learners. Designed for A2+ students, this lesson helps children describe holiday scenes, understand longer texts, and answer a variety of WH-questions with improved accuracy.

Students begin with a fun warm-up and seasonal rhyme (pages 2–3), then learn key Christmas vocabulary such as decorate, stockings, wrap, wrapping paper, wreath, gingerbread, sleigh, ornament, chimney, fireplace, and more (pages 5, 10, 15, 20, 27). Each new word is supported by visuals and example sentences so learners can easily understand and use the vocabulary in context.

Throughout the lesson, students practice forming questions like “Where are…?” “Why is…?” “What is…?” “How many…?” using picture-based prompts (pages 6–24). These activities strengthen grammar foundations while encouraging meaningful speaking practice.

The centerpiece of the lesson is the multi-page reading story Christmas Eve at Lucy’s House (pages 30–34), which follows Lucy and her family as they decorate, wrap gifts, bake gingerbread, and celebrate Christmas morning. Students then complete comprehension checks and picture questions (pages 35–41), reinforcing reading fluency and detail recognition.

With rhymes, vocabulary practice, picture conversations, and a full reading passage, this Level 3 Christmas lesson is ideal for both online tutors and classroom teachers who want a festive, academically strong December lesson.Ele
